A 1958 map of the Bucknell University campus, which was provided by the Bucknell Physical Plant, was scanned, and this map was used as the standard for all the maps. The 1865, 1895, 1915 and 1945 maps were created by deleting buildings from this map; the 1965 and 1985 maps were created by adding buildings to this map. On the pre-1958 maps, shapes of buildings were changed to conform to their dimensions at the specific time depicted by the particular map. For the post-1958 maps, buildings were taken from the 1996 computer map of the campus and were sized to conform to the 1958 scale.

On the 1865 map, the three original buildings are depicted in blue. In succeeding maps, all changes from the immediately preceding map are depicted in orange, whether the changes are additions to existing buildings or entirely new buildings. On maps following a change, the previous change reverts to blue; only changes from the preceding map are depicted in orange.

A goal of this project was to use photographs which were taken as close as possible in time to the year of each map. Unfortunately, this was not always possible. In some instances, photographs, which were taken before the time period, had to be used because no other photographs could be found in the archives. In these cases, references to the dates, when the photographs were taken, are made in the text. In some instances, the same photograph was used for two buildings because both appear in the photograph, and separate photographs for the buildings could not be located for that time period. In some instances, no photographs could be found; in most cases, there is only text and no photograph; in a few cases, especially for more recent maps, a photograph was taken of the building in 1996.

Six maps of Lewisburg and/or Bucknell University were supplied by the Bucknell University Archives: 1890, 1890-91, 1925-26, 1948, 1966 and 1988. The following sources also were used: Atlas of Union & Snyder Counties Pennsylvania. Philadelphia: Pomeroy & Beers, 1868; Map of the Public Roads in Union County Pennsylvania. Harrisburg, Pa.: State Highway Department, May 1, 1915; Works Program Administration Map for Lewisburg and East Buffalo Township for 1936; and Sanborn-Perris Map Co. maps for the following years: 1890, 1896, 1906, 1913, 1925 and 1938.

The major source for information concerning the buildings was Buildings And Areas Notebook. Lewisburg, Pa.: Ellen Clarke Bertrand Library, Bucknell University, May 5, 1995. This notebook, which was originally compiled by the archives staff from 1960 to 1979 and was updated by Daniel Daskivich in 1994-1995, contains chronological information for every property owned by the university. The following three sources were used for information in the text: Memorials of Bucknell University, 1919-1931. (published by the university but with no author or publication data ); J. Orin Oliphant. The Rise of Bucknell University. New York: Appleton-Century-Crofts ( Division of Meredith Publishing Company ), 1965; and, Lewis Edwin Theiss. Centennial History of Bucknell University, 1846-1946. Williamsport, Pa.: Grit Publishing Co. Press, 1946. The following Bucknell University Catalogs/Catalogues provided valuable information: 1900-1901, 1915-1916, 1916-1917, 1926-1927, 1944-1945, 1945-1946, 1964-1965 and 1966-1967. Finally, two other resources were used: I.H. Mauser. Centennial History of Lewisburg. Lewisburg, Pa.: Published by the Author, 1886; and, "Minutes of the Board of Trustees of Bucknell University Covering The Years 1882 To 1920 Inclusive". Typescript, May 15, 1957.

The Bucknell Registrar's Office provided data concerning the number of faculty members and student enrollment data. Gerry Commerford provided data concerning who lived where in 1985. Dick Skelton provided data concerning admissions for 1965 and 1985. The Bucknell Physical Plant provided data concerning buildings: seven pages of information sheets, revised April 8, 1994.
