Women's basketball achieved varsity status in 1973. In 1985, the head basketball coach was Lori Howard (standing to the far left). In 1985, the Lady Bisons played in the East Coast Conference, whose other members were Delaware, Drexel, Hofstra, Lafayette, Lehigh, Rider and Towson State. In the 1984-1985 season, Bucknell won 4 games and lost 22 overall and won 1 game and lost 13 in ECC play. In the 1985-1986 season, the women improved to 11-17 overall, 4-11 in the ECC. Jennifer Waltz (seated in the first row to the left just to the right of Lori Howard) was a freshman in 1985. She was just beginning an outstanding career at Bucknell. She was a four-year basketball letter winner and was a co-captain of her team in her junior year. She was also first woman to score 2,000 points in her basketball career at Bucknell. She set an ECC career scoring record during her 1985-1989 career at Bucknell, and she was elected 1988-1989 All-East Coast Conference Player of the Year. She was also selected to the Academic All American First Team for three consecutive years. In recognition of these accomplishments, her jersey was retired and a banner was hung in Davis Gymnasium in her honor. |
