In 1980, the library located in the Vaughan Literature Building ( the center portico to the portico partially visible to the right ) was named the C. Willard Smith Memorial Library in honor of Dr. C. Willard Smith, Professor of English from 1925 to 1969 and Chairman of the department from 1959 to 1969.

In 1983, the John Tilton Garden was establishe d in the courtyard of the building ( not visible in the photograph). Dr. John W. Tilton was a former Professor of English and Chair of the department. The building continued to house the English and foreign language deparments.
