The Bucknell University Bison Marching Band performed at halftime during a football game before 1964. The band had different uniforms in 1965 . The buildings at the left-rear in the photograph were temporary structures erected to be used in conjunction with the construction of Rooke Chapel, which was built on that location. Note the large number of automobiles in the parking lot, which was located between the practice field adjacent to the stadium and Coleman Hall, the rear of which is visible in the upper-right of the photograph. The Bison football team was very successful in the early to mid-1960's. Bucknell won the Lambert Cup twice during the early 1960's under the direction of head coach Robert Odell, with 7-2 records in both 1960 and 1964. In 1964, the Bison won their first victory against an Ivy League team in seventy-three years when they defeated Harvard 24-21. In 1965, Bucknell achieved a 6-3 record under first-year coach Carroll Huntress. The Bison defeated Gettysburg, Temple, Hofstra, Lehigh, Delaware and Davidson. They lost games at Pennsylvania, Lafayette and Colgate. On November 26, 1965, Bucknell defeated Delaware 26-14 in Memorial Stadium. As a result of this victory, the Bison clinched the Middle Atlantic Conference title, which was the first football championship ever won by Bucknell. This was the final home game for Little All-America end Tom Mitchell, who later pursued a professional career with Baltimore and San Francisco. |
