1965 Greenhouse Interior |

The greenhouse was built in three sections. The two sections farthest from the Botany Building were not as warm and humid as the section closest to the building. Students taking botany courses, especially the course in plant cultivation, were assigned space in these sections to raise plants. Students would plant seeds in flats with glass covers and put the flats in the dark room where the seeds would germinate. After germination, the glass covers would be removed and the seedlings would be allowed to harden before they were transplanted into the soil in the raised wooden beds in the greenhouse. There are raised wooden beds on either side of the young woman. Directly in front of her are two flats with plant markers. Behind her head are several wheels which were used to open and close the windows at the top of the greenhouse to control ventilation and temperature. The young woman is standing in the center section of the greenhouse; the third section is visible at the rear of the photograph, which is from the 1964 L'Agenda. |
