B
asketball Game

This photograph was taken before the installation of the new vapor lights. Bucknell was playing St. Joseph's University on February 16, 1965 in a game which the Bison lost, 94 to 57. This was a Middle Atlantic Conference University Division game, but there was no formal league competition during either the 1964-65 or 1965-66 seasons. Other opponents who were members of this division were Gettysburg College, Lafayette College, Lehigh University and the University of Delaware. The only team to defeat the Bison twice was Lafayette, but Bucknell played St. Joseph's only one time. In non-conference games, the Bison lost twice to Penn State (both home and away) and once to Pittsburgh (away) and once to Rutgers (home). The last two games of the 1964-65 season had to be canceled because of bad weather in March. Don Smith finished his first year as basketball coach with an 11-13 record in what would have been a twenty-six game season, beginning on December 5, 1964 and ending on March 6, 1965. The next season the Bison had a record of 15 wins and 10 losses and a MAC University Division record of 7-2 with losses to LaSalle College (away) and Lafayette College (home). The Co-Captains for the Bison for the 1964-1965 season were Lorry Hathaway and John Matthews.

Davis gym fans could sit next to the court on wooden bleachers which could be retracted when not in use for basketball games or other athletic contests. Some fans sitting on these bleachers are visible on the right in the photograph behind the scorer's table.
