In 1965, students in all degree programs at Bucknell were required to take courses in English composition. The Class of 1965, which had entered in 1961, had been required to take English 101 (Composition) and English 102 (Composition and Readings) during the freshman year. Most students in degree programs outside of engineering also had been required to take English 103 and 104 (World Literature), usually during the sophomore year. For the Class of 1969, which entered in the fall of 1965, the courses in world literature were no longer required. Members of this class were required to take English 101 (Composition, Lyric Poetry, the Epic) and English 102 (Composition, Tragedy, Comedy) during the freshman year, and a third English course at the 200-level after the freshman year.

In 1965, students who majored in English could take concentrations in theatre and drama, speech or journalism, as well as literature and composition.
