In 1960, the Engineering Building was named for Charles A.
Dana, manufacturer and Chairman of the board of the Dana Corporation,
in honor of his support of engineering and other scientific education.
In 1961-62, the Freas-Rooke Computing
Center was installed on the second floor. It was funded by
a $25,000.00 grant from the National Science Foundation, and
gifts from Guy Freas, Trustee from 1949 to 1982, and Robert L.
Rooke, Class of 1913, Trustee from 1930 to 1975. The building continued to house the four engineering departments.
The central part contained the office of the Dean of the College
of Engineering, offices for members of the staff, and classrooms.
Laboratories and drawing rooms
were located in the two wings and on the ground floor. Design
rooms, lecture rooms, a reading room, a conference room, and
individual faculty offices were also in the building. In 1965, 438 students ( eighteen percent of the undergraduate University population ) were enrolled in the College of Engineering. Of these students, only two were women. |
