ucknell Village

Bucknell Village was built in 1946-47 with funds allocated by the Federal Public Housing Authority. It was a complex of 16 buildings containing 50 apartment units for student veterans and their families.. Each apartment contained a living area, kitchen, bedrooms and bath. Apartments were ready for occupancy in August 1946. The University installed all utilities and roads. The total cost to the University for the completed project was $39,704.71.

This photograph was taken shortly after Bucknell Village had been constructed. Directly to the right of the dark-roofed sixteen buildings (in the center of the photograph) is the steel dormitory, which housed veterans (the white building). The two-lane U.S. Route 15 runs across the photograph between Bucknell Village and the triangular four-building complex of Faculty Court. To the right of Faculty Court is the university nursery containing trees and shrubs for landscaping the campus. The wide street in the foreground which intersects with Route 15 is Moore Avenue. In the right lower corner is the entrance to the Christy Mathewson Memorial Gateway. Stein Lane is in the upper right corner next to the line of trees.

For the First Semester of the 1946-47 Academic Year undergraduate enrollment in Bucknell was 1,967, of whom 1,171 ( 59.5% ) were veterans. Of these veterans, 1,161 were males. The receipts for the 1946-47 Academic Year were approximately $1,600,00, of which “…approximately $675,000 came from the Veterans Administration for tuition, fees and books for the approximately 1,200 veterans in college”. $875,000.00 came from civilian students “for tuition, board, and room.” The remainder was income from the endowment fund.

Bucknell Village was built on part of the 170 acres of land, known as the George Barron Miller Farm, which the University had purchased in 1920. In the 1960's, the University Farm, located next to Bucknell Village, was used exclusively as a dairy farm to provide milk for the University dining halls. The University Dairy was located behind the Power Plant.

In 1961-62, as a result of a decrease in the number of married students, half of the units were razed and the other half were reconditioned for 25 married students and their families.
