ast College Room

A group of navy V-12 men posed for this photograph, taken during a study break, sometime between July 1944, and October 1945. Company A of the Fourth platoon of the Navy V-12 program occupied the fourth floor of East College, while the marines occupied the lower three floors. Most of the rooms on the fourth floor contained a bunk bed and were occupied by two men, but some rooms in the center of the building contained two bunk beds and were occupied by four men.

In 1943, there had been "…accommodations for 300 in the men's dormitories." When the University accepted the Navy Department V-12 proposal, double-deck beds were placed in the dormitory rooms in Old Main, East College and West College to accommodate the 600 men in the program. Since all the men's dormitories were devoted to the V-12 Program, civilian male students had to be housed elsewhere in fraternity houses.
