eading Room

The reading room in Carnegie Library was essentially the same in its basic interior design as it had been when construction of the building was completed in 1905. However, the floor was in 1915 with the construction of the librarian station ( located in the forground in this 1938 photograph). In most other respects, the floor plan of the library had changed little from 1915.

Professor William E. Martin, Class of 1871, had served as College Librarian from 1894 to 1922, but he also had teaching responsibilities as Professor of Logic and Sociology. He was succeeded by his daughter, Eliza Martin ( Class of 1900) who, although she was the first full-time librarian of Bucknell University without teaaching obligations, had no professional training in librarianship. In 1938, Miss Martin was succeeded by Harold W. Hayden, who had received professional training at the University of Illinois and the University of Michigan.

In 1945, the library was crammed with books and pamphlets, and there was a very serious need for additional space for the rapidly expanding collections. By the conclusion of the Academic Year of 1945-46, 102,039 volumes were shelved in the library and total expenditures for the library were in excess of $27,000.00.
