West Wing

This view of the ivy-covered west wing of Old Main shows a door with steps, located at the end of the north side of the building. In 1915, there was a reading room for the use of day students on the first floor of this wing.

By 1913, the "shower baths" and "toilet facilities" that had been installed in Old Main were not functioning properly because of inadequate water pressure. In fact, the pressure was so low that most of the time there was not enough pressure "…. to flush the water closets above the second floor, and at times not above the first." To remedy this situation, a 2,000-gallon storage tank and an automatic electric pump were installed in the basement of the West Wing to supply water to the top floors of the College buildings.
