This photograph, which was taken in 1917, shows President John Howard Harris two years before his resignation from the presidency of Bucknelll University in 1919. Harris had served as President for thirty years. He continued to serve as Professor of Philosophy until 1924. When Harris became president in 1889, seventy-one students were enrolled in the college, but when he resigned thirty years later, 761 students were enrolled. The number of faculty members in the college had also increased dramatically during his presidency, from eight men in 1889 to 36 professors and instructors in 1919. During his tenure, a number of new buildings had been constructed on the campus, including East College, West College, Harris Hall, the physical and chemical laboratories, the Power House, the Foundry, and Tustin Gymnasium. President Harris died in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on April 4, 1925. He is buried in the Lewisburg Cemetery.
