Some of the faculty members of the Female Institute are
pictured in this photograph that is dated January 12, 1895. Standing in
the back row from left to right are Minnie Gould, Vocal Music; Elizabeth
Collins Eddleman, Sc.B., Franklin College, Indiana, 1891, Latin and German;
and Elysee Aviragnet, A.B. University of Paris, 1847, A.M., 1857, Mus.
Doc., Bucknell University, 1891, Vocal and Instrumental Music and the
Romance Languages. Seated in the next row from left to right are Juliet
Aiken, Instrumental Music; Mrs. Katherine B. Larison, A.M., Bucknell University,
1889, Principal of the Institute and Instructor in Literature; Harriet
Clare Armitage, English, Elocution and Gymnastics; and Eliza Bell, Ph.B.,
Bucknell University, 1894, History and English. Since only seven people
are identified on the back of the photograph, the identity of the person
seated in the foreground is unknown. Possibly she is Edna Schuyler Shires,
who was in the Fourth Year Class of the Institute during the 1895-1896
Year and whose name is at the top of the back of the photograph. Candace
Wood, Drawing and Painting, and Iona Morgan, an Assistant in Music, who
were faculty members in the Institute at this time are not in the photograph. During the 1894-1895 Academic Year, the Institute Faculty consisted of twelve instructors; during the 1895-1896 Academic Year there were thirteen instructors. Of these instructors for both academic years, three men held a joint appointment with the Academy. They were Albert Burns Stewart who taught mathematics in both the Academy and the Institute, George Elmer Fisher who taught English and science in the Academy and science in the Institute, and Llewellyn Phillips who taught Greek in both the Academy and the Insitute. William Gretzinger was listed as Registrar in conjunction with the Institute.
