A Message from Keith Buffinton, Dean of Engineering

In this issue of our newsletter we are once again highlighting one of our five strategic themes. This time it’s Inspire our Students. Education at its best can, and should be, truly inspirational, and the College of Engineering at Bucknell has a long history of inspiring its students. Part of that long history was Barry Maxwell, who passed away this past fall. Barry first came to Bucknell as a student in mechanical engineering in 1955 and retired in 1999 as Vice President for Administration. Barry not only inspired our students as a professor, and later dean, but also inspired the entire University community to work collaboratively for the betterment of Bucknell, which now recognizes those who make exceptional collaborative contributions to Bucknell with the Maxwell Award, honoring Barry’s memory. We are also highlighting inspirational experiences created by faculty for our students, including the opportunity to become University Innovation Fellows, to positively affect people’s lives through the development of a better back brace for scoliosis, and to live and learn and be inspired by fellow students in a Residential College. To paraphrase one of our University Innovation Fellows, Aleksander Antonov ‘17, anyone can be successful as long as they have the will and “some inspiration.”
