A Message from Patrick T. Mather, Dean of Engineering

I am very pleased to serve the College of Engineering as its new dean, having arrived this summer at an exciting time for engineering education at Bucknell and across the nation. Increasingly, our students pursue an engineering degree with a purpose in mind — perhaps one of NAE’s Grand Challenges — and a desire to combine disciplinary depth with a breadth of professional skills enabling significant impact. Meanwhile, our faculty are conducting basic and applied research alongside our students in areas ranging from the deformation mechanisms of amorphous metals to field research to understand the geophysical performance of cutoff walls. In this issue of our newsletter, we are excited to share with you glimpses into our latest activities. Have a look at what our students and faculty explored in Chile this past summer, or the large variety of student research projects featured in our undergraduate research symposium. Our college is healthy and the future is bright. I invite you to partner with us as we plan strategically to bring even more value to our students at a time of rapid transformations in our fields. I look forward to meeting each of you in person soon!
