Harriet Swartz Rounsley, Easton, Pa., on Jan. 14. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega and Chorale. She was a history teacher at Susquehanna Township High School for several years. Surviving is a daughter.


1929


Margaret “Peg” Wallace, Miami, Fla., on Sept. 23. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega, Sigma Tau Delta, Student Government, Symphony Orchestra, Sociological Society, Education Club, Spanish Club, hockey and basketball. In 1950 she earned a master of arts degree from Columbia University. She served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. She taught high school in Dallas, Pa., and then Wyoming, Pa., until retiring in 1973. Margaret resided in Wyoming until moving to Miami in 1979. She is survived by a sister.

William Herbst, Sunbury, Pa., on Jan. 5. He was a member of Big Four Engineering Society and the American Institute of Electrical Engineering. He was employed by the Pennsylvania Power and Light Co. Survivors include a brother, Henry ’28, 8616 Harjoan Ave., San Diego, CA 92123.

Paul Johnson, Mifflinburg, Pa., on Dec. 28. He was a member of Sigma Chi and men’s tennis. He graduated from the University of Virginia Law School in 1937. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and established his law practice in Mifflinburg in 1940, continuing until his retirement in 1992. In addition, he served as the legal adviser and solicitor for many townships, municipalities and organizations over the years. Howard Brooks, Etters, Pa., on April 3, 1999. He earned a doctor of dentistry degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Army Dental Corp. He was a retired dentist.


1934


Kathryn Fluck Huus, Rockland, Maine, on Dec. 8. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega, Sociological Society, Y.W.C.A. and Women’s Athletic Association and served as secretary–treasurer in her junior year. She taught school before WWII. She is survived by her husband, Carl ’36, 15 Katahdin Ave., Rockland, ME 04841, three children and six grandchildren.

Georgia Turner Erney, Cherry Hill, N.J., on March 12, 1999. She was a member of Y.W.C.A. She was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph ’31, and a daughter.

John Rodgers, Emmaus, Pa., on Aug. 17, 1997. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi. He retired from the General Electric Company in 1976.

Paul Zimmerman, Hartleton, Pa., on Jan. 31. He retired in 1968 after a lifetime career in agriculture in Limestone Township. He is survived by his wife, Martha May, 313 Main St., Hartleton, PA 17829, nine children, 27 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, a brother and three sisters. He was preceded in death by two sons.


1937


Elizabeth “Betty” Shaw Fager, Mechanicsburg, Pa., on Dec. 23. She was a member of Kappa Delta. Surviving are her husband, Richard, 5 West Hill Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, three children, a brother, Robert Shaw ’32, 50 West Lauer Lane, Camp Hill, PA 17011, and two grandchildren.

Alden Thompson, Carterville, Ill., on Nov. 16. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta and in 1964 was a charter member of William Bucknell Associates. He graduated from Temple University Medical School in 1942 and was a resident in pathology at New York City Hospital until 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After the war, he worked as a pathologist in NYC, Dayton, Ohio, and Ann Arbor, Mich. He became the first permanent pathologist to the Herrin Hospital in 1968 until his retirement in 1984. Survivors include his wife, Sarah, 103 Dogwood Lane, Carterville, IL 62918, and six children. He was preceded in death by his first wife, parents, brother and three sisters.


1938


Abraham Zager, Red Bank, N.J., on Dec. 24. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Mu and Christian Association, played freshman basketball and served as assistant football manager. After graduating, he served his class as president, assistant class fund manager and class reporter. He graduated from the University of Newark Law School in 1941 and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was an attorney with Zager, Fuchs and Ambrose, formerly, Zager, Fuchs, Leckstein, Kauff and Needle from 1970 to 1990. He was a former municipal court judge of Tinton Falls and Red Bank and served as attorney for many boards and organizations throughout his distinguished career. Preceded in death by his wife, he is survived by three children, a brother, three sisters, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Roger Mathieu, Severna Park, Md., on Nov. 30. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha. During WWII he worked at the Bureau of Standards and for the U.S. Army Signal Corps. After 43 years at Westinghouse, he retired as an electrical engineer in design and development of color TV transmitters. He is survived by his wife, Helen, 302 Riggs Ave., Severna Park, MD 21146, a daughter, three grandchildren and five siblings.


1939


William Toland, Sunbury, Pa., on Jan. 21. He was a member of Kappa Delta Rho, Pi Delta Epsilon, Concern and Action, Christian Association, Art Club and intramural sports, and served on the Handbook and as Bucknellian sports editor, and was baseball manager for two years. He was appointed director of sports publicity for Bucknell in 1939. In 1982 he received the Bison Club Award for outstanding contributions to the Bucknell athletic program. He served with the U.S. Army during WWII. After more than 35 years of service to the Sunbury Daily Item, he retired as sports editor. He is survived by his wife, Grace, 418 Park Drive, Sunbury, PA 17801, and daughter, Darlene Toland Broscious ’67, 6 Seabury Lane, Downingtown, PA 19335.

Barbara Rupp Grimes, Knoxville, Tenn., on Nov. 23. She graduated from the Mountainside Hospital School of Nursing in Montclair, N.J. She was a retired registered nurse. Predeceased by her parents and four brothers, she is survived by her husband, John, 9013 Coburn Drive, Knoxville, TN 37922, two children, two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Lyle Long Reckord, Baltimore, Md., on March 24, 1999. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta, Student Government, Christian Association, Cap and Dagger, Bucknellian and L’Agenda.

Joseph Stamer MS, Whitehall Township, Pa., on Dec. 26. He was a graduate of Bloomsburg University. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a math teacher and head of the math department at Millburn (N.J.) High School for 33 years before retiring in 1976. Previously, he taught at Oregon State University and the Pennsylvania State undergraduate center in DuBois, Clearfield County. Surviving are his wife, Eleanor, 3514 Musselman Court, Whitehall, PA 18052, two daughters, seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Raymon Eaton Jr., Forty Fort, Pa., on Nov. 23. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha. He graduated from Wyoming Seminary in 1938 and served in the U.S. Army Air Force in WWII. He was self-employed as a CPA for many years and later was an account manager for the Frank Martz Coach Co. in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, 1307 Murray St., Forty Fort, PA 18704, two daughters and two sisters.

Walter Freyburger, Penney Farms, Fla., on Oct. 6. He was a member of Christian Association, Delta Phi Alpha, Phi Sigma and Phi Beta Kappa. He received a doctorate in pharmacology from the University of Michigan. Walter retired in 1982 from the position of director of cardiovascular disease research at the Upjohn Co. in Kalamazoo, Mich., where he had been employed since 1950. William Linaberry, Boynton Beach, Fla., on Aug. 27. He earned a doctorate from Temple University Dental School and served in the U.S. Army Dental Corps during WWII. He practiced dentistry in Springfield, Pa. Survivors include his sister, Margaret Linaberry Granberry ’42, 307 Stephanie Drive, Kerrville, TX 78028.

Jeanne Rockwell-Noonan, Barrytown, N.Y., on Dec. 7. She was a member of Sigma Tau Delta and Pi Delta Epsilon and was the first graduate of the Bucknell Civil Air Patrol. She attended the University of Texas and earned a master of arts degree from the University of Michigan in 1974. In WWII, she served as a lieutenant in the coastal patrol of the civil air patrol. She was a writer and photographer. Surviving are a son and two granddaughters.

Bennett Williams M’49, Lakewood, N.J., on Nov. 20. He was a member of Alpha Chi Sigma, Beta Epsilon Sigma, American Institute of Chemical Engineering and American Society of Civil Engineering. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. From 1947-49, he taught at Bucknell, then worked with Parsons, Brinckenhoff, Quade and Douglas Consulting Engineers, New York, from 1950-59. He also worked with the Bureau of Public Roads in Boston, Mass., and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, Hightstown. After retiring, he consulted on toll road design and construction in Jakarta, Indonesia. Richard Kuntzleman MS, Reinerton, Pa., on Nov. 19. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Muhlenberg College in 1935. He taught grade school and high school in Tower City and was principal in the Blain, Middleburg and Porter Township school districts. He became superintendent of Porter Township school district and was an assistant county superintendent in Pottsville until retiring. Surviving are his wife, Ruth, 1212 E. Wiconisco Ave., Reinerton, PA 17980, a daughter, brother, sister, three grandsons and two great-grandchildren.


1944


Robert Gatski, Danville, Pa., on Nov. 28. In 1971 he received the Bucknell Alumni Award for Recognized Service to his Fellow Man. He graduated from the School of Nursing at Danville State Hospital in 1941 and from Jefferson Medical College in 1948. He returned to Danville State Hospital as a junior physician in 1949, where he later served as a clinical director and superintendent, retiring in 1977 after 22 years. He then worked part time at the Danville Clinic and Family Counseling, Bloomsburg, retiring in 1997. He is survived by his wife, Betty, 310 E. Market St., Danville, PA 17821, four children, including Robert Gatski Jr. ’65, 10 Greenfield St., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603, and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother.

Nonette Geschwindt Lacko, Young Harris, Georgia, on May 10, 1999. She was a member of Christian Association, L’Agenda, Booster Club, Kappa Delta Epsilon, Mixed Chorus, Women’s Glee Club and Women’s Athletic Association. She was employed by the Ormond Reinsurance Group Inc., Ormond Beach, Fla.

Douglas Richardson, Laurel, Del., formerly Basking Ridge, N.J., on Dec. 21. He was a member of Kappa Sigma, Cap and Dagger and Radio Workshop. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a sales administrator for the Monroe Division of the Litton Business Systems Inc., Morristown, N.J., for 32 years before retiring in 1978. Frances Rowe MA, New Haven, Conn., on Feb. 14, 1998. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Hood College and an elementary certificate from Bloomsburg State College. She joined Shamokin (Pa.) area school district in 1941, where she served as teacher, librarian and guidance counselor until retiring in 1981. Survivors include a brother.

Ralph Phelleps M’50, Camp Hill, Pa., on Jan. 14. He was founder and president of Tau Kappa Epsilon, and a member of the Christian Association, Psychology Club, Sociology Club and Philosophy Club. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII. After more than 30 years of service with the state of Pennsylvania in the fields of corrections, parole and mental health, he retired as a special assistant for forensic services with the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare Office of Mental Health. Survivors include his wife, Edna Zimmerman Phelleps ’49, 581 Devon Road, Camp Hill, PA 17011, and a daughter.

William Weaver, Charlotte, N.C., on Nov. 24. He was a member of Sigma Chi and the Bison Club. He served in the American Field Service as a volunteer ambulance driver in support of British army forces during WWII. After 39 years with The Equitable Financial Co. in Charlotte, he retired. Preceded in death by his wife, he is survived by two children and four grandchildren.

Joseph Shinal, Seneca Falls, N.Y., on Dec. 29. He was a member of Alpha Chi Sigma, Engineers Club, Radio Club, Booster Club, Camera Club and American Institute for Chemical Engineering. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. He was a pilot and flight instructor and retired in 1981 as a quality control manager with Philips ECG (formerly Sylvania), where he had been employed since 1949. Henry Shotsberger MA, Camp Hill, Pa., on Aug. 9, 1997. He received a bachelor’s degree from Susquehanna University and was a math teacher at Steelton (Pa.) High School.

Ralph Frye Jr., Monongahela, Pa., on Dec. 3. He was a member of Sigma Chi and Phi Eta Sigma. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and retired as plant controller at the Corning Glass Plant in Charleroi, Pa. He is survived by his wife, Zora, 170 Terrace Drive, Monongahela, PA 15063, three sons and three grandchildren.

William Bebb, Penfield, N.Y., on Dec. 23. He was a member of Pi Mu Epsilon, Sigma Pi Sigma, Phi Beta Kappa and Delta Phi Alpha. He attended Cornell University and earned a master of science degree from the University of Rochester. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines and Air Force during WWII. He was employed by Eastman Kodak until retirement. Preceded in death by his first and second wives, he is survived by five children, two sisters and five grandchildren.

Andrew Speirs, Rockland, N.Y., on March 21, 1999. He was a member of Theta Chi. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a retired supervisor with Orange & Rockland Utilities.

James Ferns, Pompey, N.Y., on Jan. 2. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha, track and field, Engineer Magazine, Glee Club and Booster Club. He retired in 1987 after 38 years as an account executive with Industrial Risk Insurers in NYC. He is survived by his wife, Jean, P.O. Josephine DeSantis Marini, Darnestown, Md., on Jan. 21. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega. She was awarded a teacher’s certificate by West Chester State in 1949 and served on the faculty at the Billingsport School in Paulsboro, N.J. She also was employed as a technical assistant for the Gypsum Corp.

John Knapp III, Fair Haven, N.J., on Jan. 29, 1999. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. He retired as vice president of J. Gerber and Co. Inc. He is survived by his wife, Marie Mohn Knapp ’49, 12 Woodland Drive, Fair Haven, NJ 07704.

Jack Wanich MS, Danville, Pa., on Jan. 12. He was a graduate of the former Bloomsburg State Teachers College and pursued a doctoral degree from Penn State University. He served with the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a business education teacher for 40 years, having been employed by the Danville school district for 31 years. The last 14 years he served as principal of the high school. Survivors include his wife, Helen, 109 Kaseville Road, Danville, PA 17821, and a brother.

Dale Derr, Bloomsburg, Pa., on Jan. 23. He was a member of Cap and Dagger, Delta Mu Delta, Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Eta Sigma. He was a graduate of Harvard University Law School. He served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. He was employed by the law firm of Duane, Morris and Hecksher, Philadelphia, from 1953 to 1956. He established a law office in Bloomsburg in 1956, later becoming a partner with Derr, Pursel, Luschas and Norton, until semi-retiring in 1997. During his career, he served as solicitor for various townships and municipalities in Columbia County. Harold Eisley, Lexington Park, Md., on Jan. 11. He received a bachelor’s degree from the Indiana Institute of Technology, Fort Wayne, Ind. He served in the U.S. Navy and retired in 1989 from the naval base in Lexington Park where he was employed as an electronics engineer for more than 25 years. Surviving are three children, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

William Brooks, Troy, Mich., on Nov. 28. He received an MBA from the University of Notre Dame and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was executive director of A.M.R. Pemp, an employment placement agency, until retiring. Predeceased by his wife, he is survived by two daughters and a granddaughter.

Margaret “Peggy” Aulenbach Jones, Berks, Pa., on Nov. 1, 1995. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

Robert Kerr, Forsyth, N.C., on Nov. 14, 1998. He was a member of Delta Upsilon, “Bucknell Engineer,” American Institute of Chemical Engineers, soccer, intramurals, Men’s Glee Club and was vice president of Alpha Chi Sigma. He attended the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Chemical Engineering and graduated from the Cornell University Medical College in 1961. He served in the U.S. Army counter intelligence corps and was an associate professor of medicine at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, N.C. He was a retired physician of internal medicine.

Jules Orenstein, Great Neck, N.Y., on Jan. 18. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Mu, Booster Club, Cap and Dagger, Bridge Club, Christian Association, Jazz Club, football, Musical Instrument Club and R.O.T.C. Officers’ Club and participated in intramural sports, University Players, WVBU, and soccer. He was elected alumni class treasurer in 1979. He held a law degree from New York University Law School and served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. A longtime Nassau County Court judge, he was elected to the District Court in 1978 and to the County Court in 1985. He was re-elected to another 10-year term in 1995. Before taking the bench, he had served for 11 years as an assistant district attorney in Nassau. He also spent four years as an assistant attorney general and five years in private practice. Surviving are his wife, Harriet, 30 Potters Lane, Great Neck, NY 11024, two sons including Glen ’85, 2959 Judith Drive, Merrick, NY 11566, a sister, brother, nephew and two grandchildren.

Gladys Halkyard Logan, Lititz, Pa., on Jan. 11. She was a member of Chapel Choir, Band, Glee Club Tour and Mu Phi Epsilon. She was a graduate of the former Lankenau School of Nursing and earned her teaching certificate from Bloomsburg University. She was a registered nurse at Masonic Homes, Elizabethtown, Pa., and taught with Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 in the gifted program in foreign languages. Surviving are her husband, Thomas M’72, 506 General Sutter Ave., Lititz, PA 17543, and a daughter.

Judith Duncan Czerny, Batavia, Ill., on Dec. 15. She was a member of Phi Mu, WSGA, and the Christian Association, participated in Student Handbook, WVBU, May Day, Mixed Chorus, Orchesis, Modern Dance, House of Representatives and Booster Club, and was a cheerleader. She taught fifth grade for 18 years in Batavia, retiring in 1993. Predeceased by her parents and husband, she is survived by two sons, two sisters, and several nieces and nephews.

Barbara Josenhans Ancona, Tlalpan, Mexico, on Dec. 28. She was a member of Delta Zeta, Phi Sigma, Modern Dance, Concern and Action, Orchesis, Mixed Chorus and Christian Association, and she served as section editor of the Student Handbook. She served as secretary of the Bucknell Alumni Club of Long Island. Following graduation, she was employed by Charles Pfizer, Brooklyn, N.Y., until 1963. Survivors include her husband, Jorge, Pretal 10, Charros del Pedregal, Tlalpan, Mexico DS 14010, Mexico, and a daughter.

William Dawson, White Plains, N.Y., on Dec. 2, 1998. He was president of the Abbey Richmond Ambulance Service.

Janice Byrns Claiborne, Millbrook, N.Y., on Feb. 18, 1999. She was a member of Pi Delta Phi, Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Beta Kappa, WRA Board, Independent Women’s Council, House of Representatives, Bridge Club, field hockey, basketball, volleyball, May Day and French House. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for study at the University of Caen, France, in 1958-59.

Nicholas Scherba MA, Trenton, N.J., on Dec. 11. He received a bachelor’s degree from King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He served in the U.S. Marines during WWII. Before retiring, he was a guidance counselor at Steinered High School, Hamilton Township, N.J. Surviving are his wife, Eleanor, 34 Samdin Blvd., Trenton, NJ 08610, a sister and several nephews.

Marlyn Beaver, Lewisburg, Pa., and Hollywood, Fla., on Jan. 18. He was a member of Delta Mu Delta and Economics Club. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was first employed by U.S. Steel Inc. and retired as a manager from IBM, Kingston, N.Y., after 25 years of service. Kenneth Scott, Scottsdale, Ariz., on Dec. 30, 1998. He was a member of Kappa Delta Rho, Society for the Advancement of Management and participated in intramurals. He was employed by Bell Atlantic International Wireless.

Scott Anderson MS, Shamokin, Pa., on Dec. 30. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Susquehanna University. He was a biology teacher and freshman football coach at Shamokin Area High School before retiring in 1997. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, 1505 West Fern St., Shamokin, PA 17866, five children, six grandchildren, a sister and two brothers. He was preceded in death by two brothers.

David Rath, Corte Madera, Calif., on Nov. 27. He was a member of Sigma Chi, lettered twice in soccer and tennis, was named to the Tri-State All-America Soccer Team in 1968 and played MAC soccer (most valuable player, 1969). He earned an MBA at the University of California, Berkeley in 1972. He was vice president of Franklin Properties Inc. in San Mateo, Calif. Surviving are his wife, Anita, 5 Ridge Court, Corte Madera, CA 94925, three daughters, his grandmother and four sisters.


1975


David Weiner, Plano, Texas, on Nov. 9. He was treasurer and rush chairman of Lambda Chi Alpha, and vice president of Delta Mu Delta. He participated in intramurals, B-Squad, and soccer. He was awarded an MBA from the New York University Graduate School of Business in 1979. He was a CPA, licensed in New York and Texas. He had been the chief financial officer for Global Employers Network. He is survived by two children, his fiancée, parents, brother and former wife.


1986


Marc Needleman, Fitchburg, Mass., formerly Worcester, on Dec. 12. He was a member of Kappa Delta Rho and worked on the Bucknellian. An AIDS activist and community health leader in Worcester, Mass., Marc had been the coordinator of health education/health awareness services in Worcester since 1995, and was an adviser on health education to AIDS Project Worcester from 1991–1995. He was the first chairperson of the HIV/AIDS Bureau Advisory Board of the state department of public health in Boston, and a founder of the Central Massachusetts Consumer Advisory Board. Surviving are his mother, two sisters and a nephew.

Jennifer Lauder, Painesville, Ohio, on Dec. 3. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, Phi Eta Sigma, Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Beta Kappa. After graduating from Bucknell, she pursued studies in international relations at the American University. Jennifer is survived by her father, Richard, 8235 Edgewood Drive, Mentor, OH 44060 and mother, Donna, 133 Hampshire Cove, Painesville, OH 44077.
