SPECIES Cephalophus niger

Author:Gray, 1846.
Citation:Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., [ser. 1], 18: 165.
Common Name:Black Duiker
Type Locality:"Guinea" but apparently Ghana, Shama (see comments).
Distribution:Rainforest zone, in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria (west of lower Niger River), Sierra Leone, and Togo. No record from Benin.
Status:IUCN – Lower Risk (nt).
Comments:The type of niger came from the Leiden Museum, one of a series from Chama (= Shama) and Dabocrom, Ghana, including the syntypes of pluto. Only the specimens from Dabocrom were retained in Leiden (Jentink, 1892) so presumably the type is from Shama.
