SPECIES Equus grevyi

Author:Oustalet, 1882.
Citation:La Nature (Paris), 10(2): 12.
Common Name:Grévy's Zebra
Type Locality:Described as "region de l'Afrique orientale qu'on appelle le pays des Gallas", i.e. Ethiopia, Gallaland, Shoa Prov. (Rzasnicki, 1951), restricted to Awash Valley (Yalden et al., 1986).
Distribution:Dry desert regions of S and E Ethiopia, N Kenya, and S Somalia (extinct).
Status:CITES – Appendix I; U.S. ESA – Threatened; IUCN – Endangered.
Comments:Reviewed by Churcher (1993, Mammalian Species, 453). Restriction of type locality to Lake Zwai (Roosevelt and Heller, 1914) is erroneous, as there are no records of the species from this lake region (Yalden et al, 1986).
