Peterson (1981) and Maeda (1982) recognized more than one species in this complex, but did not agree on species limits; see Hill (1983), who argued convincingly that all of these forms should be regarded as subspecies of tristis pending further study. Koopman (1993) included bismarckensis in this complex, but also see Hill (1983), who suggested that this poorly-known taxon might be allied to magnater.
