SPECIES Hylomys megalotis
Author: | Jenkins and M. F. Robinson, 2002. | Citation: | Bull. Nat. Hist. Mus. Lond. (Zool.), 68: 2. | Common Name: | Long-eared Gymnure | Type Locality: | Laos, Khammouan Province, Khammouan Limestone National Biodiversity Conservation Area, Thakhek district, c. 18 km N Thakhek, environs of Ban Muang and Ban Doy, 17°33’15’’N, 104°49’30’’E. | Distribution: | Known only from the type locality. | Comments: | A very distinct species with long ears and a long skull. Jenkins and Robinson (2002) performed a phylogenetic analysis of skeletal characters of the species of Galericinae and included five species in Hylomys. They did not, however, consider paleontological data presented by Mein and Ginsburg (1997) who retained Neotetracus and Neohylomys as separate genera. A genetic study is warranted to test the phylogenetic hypothesis presented by Jenkins and Robinson (2002). |
