GENUS Capromys

Author:Desmarest, 1822.
Citation:Bull. Sci. Soc. Philom. Paris: 185.
Type Species:Capromys fourniere Desmarest, 1822 (= Isodon pilorides Say, 1822).
Comments:"Capromys" geayi (Pousarges, 1899) was described from Venezuela, where it was collected in the mountains between La Guayra and Caracas. It was placed in its own genus (Procapromys) by Chapman (1901:322). The type specimen is Mus. Nat. Hist. Nat. (Paris) No. 1898-1785 (1834A). No further specimens have ever been collected, and it is possible that the collecting locality was incorrectly recorded. This specimen is likely a juvenile Capromys from Cuba erroneously reported from Venezuela.
