GENUS Limnomys

Author:Mearns, 1905.
Citation:Proc. U.S. Natl. Mus., 28: 451.
Type Species:Limnomys sibuanus Mearns, 1905.
Comments:RattusDivision. Taxonomic history and past erroneous association with Rattus reviewed by Musser (1977b), and Musser and Heaney (1992). Revised by Musser and Heaney (1992), who considered Limnomys a montane forest member of the Philippine New Endemics. Phylogenetic analyses of complete mtDNA cytochrome b sequences for 13 of the 16 genera of endemic Philippine rodents indicates that species of Limnomys are sister-taxa to Tarsomys, and in a clade containing species of Rattus everetti and Bullimus (Jansa and Heaney, 2001), which are also New Endemics. This alliance along with membership in the Rattus Division corroborated by chromosomal data (Rickart and Heaney, 2002).
