Type Locality:Perú, Cajamarca Dept., Tolón, 100 m.
Distribution:Coast and lower Pacific slopes of W Perú, Depts. Piura (see Lavrentchenko and Dmitriev, 1994) to Ayacucho.
Status:IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Comments:Sister species of P. limatus according to phylogenetic analysis of abbreviated cytochrome b sequences (Spotorno et al., 2001). The basis for the reported presence of P. amicus in Argentina (Heinonen Fortabat and Chebez, 1997; Massoia and Donadío, 1990) has been reidentified as an example of Oligoryzomys chacoensis (Galliari et al., 1996).
