SPECIES Steatomys jacksoni

Author:Hayman, 1935.
Actual Date:1936
Citation:Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond., 1935: 930.
Common Name:Jackson’s African Fat Mouse
Type Locality:Ghana, Ashanti, Wenchi.
Distribution:Spottily recorded from the type locality (Grubb et al., 1998), possibly Togo (Rosevear, 1969), and SW Nigeria (Anadu, 1979); limits indeterminate.
Status:IUCN – Vulnerable.
Comments:Included in S. pratensis by Coetzee (1977a), but provisionally retained as species by Rosevear (1969) and Swanepoel and Schlitter (1978) until significance of the diagnostic character (size and shape of interparietal) is assessed by additional specimens and other information. The relationship between S. jacksoni (females not yet collected) and the other large-bodied species, S. bocagei and S. opimus, needs to be examined.
