Common Name:Painted Spiny Pocket Mouse
Type Locality:Mexico, Jalisco, San Sebastian, 4,300 ft. (1,311 m).

Comments:Reviewed by McGhee and Genoways (1978, Mammalian Species No. 83). Genic data suggest that pictus as currently comprised is paraphyletic; additional species are likely to be recognized with further analyses (see Morales and Engstrom, 1989, and Rogers, 1990). Williams et al. (1993) reviewed subspecific taxonomy.
