Common Name:Nyala
Type Locality:South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal, "Hills that border upon the northern shores of St. Lucia Bay, in the Zulu country, lat. 28° south".
Distribution:S Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa (N and E Limpopo Prov., E Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal), Swaziland (extinct, reintroduced), and N and S Zimbabwe. Reintroduced or newly introduced to private land in South Africa and Namibia (East, 1999).
Status:IUCN – Lower Risk (cd).
Comments:The name angasii is usually attributed to Gray, because Angas (1849) stated "Mr Gray has named this species after my father, George Fife Angas, Esq, of South Australia" but this is insufficient to make Gray the author (Article 50.1.1, International Code of Zoological Nomenclature; International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, 1999).
