SPECIES Mazama gouazoubira
Author: | G. Fischer [von Waldheim], 1814. | Citation: | Zoognosia, 3: 465. | Common Name: | South American Brown Brocket | Type Locality: | "Paraqu." (Paraguay); restricted to Asuncion region (Cabrera, 1961:339). | Distribution: | N Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama (San Jose Isl), Paraguay, Peru, Surinam, Uruguay, and Venezuela. | Status: | IUCN – Data Deficient (DSG recommended). | Comments: | Although the specific name is based on the gouazoubira of Azara, the original spelling was "gouazoupira" not "gouazoubira". The latter has been conserved as the correct original spelling (Opinion 1985; International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, 2001b). Cabrera (1961) and Czernay (1987) included rondoni in superciliaris; Duarte (1996) and Duarte and Merino (1997) listed it as a separate species, based on an anomalous karyotype; Pinder and Leeuwenberg (1997) listed it as a subspecies, and provisionally also listed namby as valid. |
