GENUS Blastocerus

Author:Wagner, 1844.
Citation:Invon Schreber, Die Säugetiere, 4: 366.
Type Species:Cervus paludosus Desmarest, 1822 (= Cervus dichotomus Illiger, 1815).
Comments:Included in Odocoileus by Haltenorth (1963:44-45), but generically distinct (Groves and Grubb, 1987). Hershkovitz (1958) argued that first valid use of generic name was Gray, 1850 but Grubb (2000a) provided evidence to support wide acceptance of Wagner, 1844 as author.
