Common Name:Spectacled Bear
Type Locality:"cordiliéres du Chili," restricted by Cabrera (1957) to "los montañas al este de Trujillo, departamento de la Libertad, Perú."
Distribution:Mountainous regions of W Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama (?), Peru, W Venezuela.
Status:CITES – Appendix I; IUCN – Vulnerable.
Comments:Some authors have considered this genus as the only extent member of the subfamily Tremarctinae (Thenius, 1976).
