U.S. ESA – Endangered as H. y. cacomitli, H. y. fossata, H. y. panamensis, and H. y. tolteca; IUCN – Endangered as Herpailurus yagouaroundi cacomitli, otherwise Least Concern as H. yagouaroundi. | Comments: | Others have used yaguaroundi Lacépède, 1809, or yagouaroundi Desmarest, 1816, however, the former is invalid and the latter is a junior synonym.
