Type Locality:West Africa, "Guinee."
Distribution:Equatorial Africa from Senegal to W Kenya, south to NW Zambia and SW Angola; NE Mozambique; Bioko (Equatorial Guinea).
Status:CITES – Appendix II; IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Comments:Subgenus Phataginus. Meester (1972a:2) recognized two subspecies. Includes tridentata described from "coastal Mozambique"; see Ansell (1982:35).
