Distribution:Europe to Caucasus and Iran; Bulgaria; England; S Sweden.
Status:IUCN 2003 and IUCN/SSC Action Plan (2001) – Vulnerable.
Comments:For discussion of correct spelling (bechsteinii, not bechsteini) see Bogdanowicz and Kock (1998). Apparently closely related to daubentonii; see Ruedi and Mayer (2001). Reviewed by Horácek et al. (2000) and Baagĝe (2001a).
