HOME --> CLASS MAMMALIA  --> ORDER CHIROPTERA  --> FAMILY Vespertilionidae

SUBFAMILY Antrozoinae

Author:Miller, 1897.
Citation:North American Fauna, 13: 41.
Comments:Simmons (1998) raised this group to family level and moved it to Molossoidea, but recent studies based on DNA sequence data (e.g., Hoofer and Van Den Bussche, 2001) indicate that Antrozous belongs in Vespertilionidae, a placement in line with more traditional classifications (e.g., Hill and Smith, 1984; Koopman, 1993, 1994; McKenna and Bell, 1997; Miller, 1897). This group may nest within Vespertilioninae, but its placement remains unclear; accordingly, it is here retained as a distinct subfamily pending further study.
