SPECIES Rousettus (Rousettus) leschenaultii

Author:Desmarest, 1820.
Citation:Mammalogie, in Encyclop. Méthod., 1: 110.
Common Name:Leschenault's Rousette
Type Locality:India, Pondicherry.

Status:IUCN/SSC Action Plan (1992) – Not Threatened. IUCN 2003 – Lower Risk (lc).
Comments:Subgenus Rousettus. Includes seminudus; see Sinha (1970). See Peterson et al. (1995) for a discussion of shortridgei. Kock et al. (2000b) treated shortridgei as a distinct species without comment. Reviewed in part by Bates and Harrison (1997) and Kock et al. (2000b). This name is sometimes spelled leschenaulti (e.g., Koopman, 1993, 1994), but I prefer the original spelling.
