Holden (1993) provisionally recognized S. severtzovi but noted the need for further documentation, and the inclusion of other data sets, to bolster its specific status. Recently, Koval’skaya et al. (2000) sampled more geographic samples and amplified the chromosomal and geographic definition of S. severtzovi relative to S. subtilis, and Zagorodnyk and Kondratenko (2000) provided more chromosomal and distributional information.
