Type Locality:"Summit of Donner Pass, Placer Co., Cal[ifornia, USA]."
Distribution:Sierra Nevada of EC California and WC Nevada to N coast of California, and NC Oregon (USA).
Status:IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Comments:Subgenus Neotamias. Elevated from a subspecies of townsendii by Sutton and Nadler (1974); distinction also suggested by Kain (1985), Sutton (1987), and Gannon and Lawlor (1989). Reviewed by Gannon and Forbes (1995, Mammalian Species No. 502).
