Common Name:Idaho Ground Squirrel
Type Locality:"New Meadows, Adams County, Idaho [USA]."
Distribution:WC Idaho (USA), in three isolated areas; north of Payette River to Hitt and Cuddy Mtns; between Cuddy and Seven Devils Mtns, and east of West Mtns.
Status:"...limited ranges and small breeding populations...vulnerable..." (Yensen, 1991:597). U.S. ESA – Candidate taxon as S. b. endemicus, Threatened as S. b. brunneus; IUCN - Critically Endangered as S. b. brunneus, Vulnerable as S. b. endemicus; otherwise Endangered as S. brunneus.
Comments:Subgenus Spermophilus (Hall, 1981:385). Includes endemicus, which "may be reaching species-level separation" (Yensen, 1991:597). Included in clade which also contains canus and mollis. Population genetics analyzed by Gavin et al., 1999. Reviewed by Yensen and Sherman (1997, Mammalian Species No. 560).
