SPECIES Spermophilus (see comments) adocetus

Author:Merriam, 1903.
Citation:Proc. Biol. Soc. Wash., 16: 79.
Common Name:Tropical Ground Squirrel
Type Locality:"La Salada, 40 miles [64 km] south of Uruapan, Michoacan, Mexico."
Distribution:E Jalisco, Michoacan, and N Guerrero (WC Mexico).
Status:IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Comments:Subgenus Notocitellus (A. H. Howell, 1938) or Otospermophilus (Hall, 1981:399); but see also Birney and Genoways (1973) who suggested it is closer to subgenus Ictidomys. Molecular sequence data indicate that adocetus and annulatus are sister species (Harrison et al., 2003), and basal to all other spermophiline ground squirrels, except Ammospermophilus. Reviewed by Best (1995g, Mammalian Species No. 504).
