Common Name:Northern Flying Squirrel
Type Locality:Not specified. Restricted by A. H. Howell (1918:33) to the mouth of Severn River, Ontario, Canada.
Distribution:Alaska and Canada, NW USA to S California and W South Dakota (Black Hills), NE USA to S Appalachian Mtns.
Status:U.S. ESA Endangered as G. s. coloratus and G. s. fuscus; IUCN Endangered as G. s. griseifrons, Data Deficient as G. s. californicus, Vulnerable as G. s. coloratus and G. s. fuscus, otherwise Lower Risk (lc) as G. sabrinus.
Comments:Reviewed by Wells-Gosling and Heaney (1984, Mammalian Species No. 229). Subspecies according to Hall (1981); also see Arbogast (1999) who presented evidence that a western clade consisting of oregonensis and californicus may be of full species rank.
