Common Name:Black and Rufous Elephant Shrew
Type Locality:Tanzania, mainland opposite Zanzibar.
Distribution:E Tanzania (including Mafia and Zanzibar); SE Kenya.
Status:IUCN – Endangered.
Comments:Two subspecies are listed by Corbet and Hanks (1968:64) and Corbet (1974:2). Kingdon (1974a:41) considered petersi a subspecies of cirnei.
