Imaging Center

The Imaging Facility currently houses:

  • Nikon Eclipse E800 upright light microscope equipped with DIC optics; epi-fluorescence optics with fluorescein, rhodamine and CY5 filter sets; and a Hamamatsu 'Orca' CCD camera for digital image recording.
  • Nikon Elipse TE200 inverted light microscope equipped with phase and epi-fluorescence optics; a Hamamatsu 'Orca' CCD camera for digital image recording; and a 35 mm camera for image recording using conventional film.
  • PCM 2000 Nikon Personal Confocal Microscope System with argon, red HeNe and green HeNe lasers that is capable of being attached to either of the above upright and inverted Nikon microscopes.
  • Nikon Optiphot upright light microscope equipped with DIC and epi-fluorescence optics with fluorescein and rhodamine filter sets; a Hamamatsu Photonic processor and video camera, VCR, and monitor for video-enhanced contrast DIC imaging; and a 35 mm camera for image recording on conventional film.
  • Philips Transmission Electron Microscope.
  • RMC and Sorvall ultramicrotomes for production of high quality ultrathin sections for TEM imaging.
  • LKB knifebreaker for producing glass knifes.
  • Processing equipment and microtomes for the preparation of paraffin section and histology slides.
  • Fully equipped darkroom for processing and printing light and electron micrographs for data recording and publication.

The Arthur Vining Davis Foundation generously provided funds to update the equipment in the Imaging Facility. With this money we purchased the Nikon Eclipse E800 and TE200 light microscopes plus the PCM 2000 Personal Confocal Microscope System. This allows us to image thin optical sections at much higher resolution than with normal epifluorescence. This system can be used to colocalize up to four different fluorescent probes. The collected images can then be reconstructed, enhanced, or analyzed using a variety of image processing techniques. In addition, the Hamamatsu 'Orca' CCD camera, computers, monitor, Jazz drive, and imaging software were also purchased for phase, DIC, and  low light level fluorescence digitized image recording and processing.
