Guidelines and Procedures for Submission and Publication of Items in Notes & Notices
"Notes and Notices" is a Bucknell University newsletter for faculty and staff and is published by Administrative Services 3 times a week for distribution on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. Its purpose is to reduce costs by eliminating the need for the issuance of individual announcements and to provide a convenient and effective means of informing members of the Bucknell community of official university business, policies, and events.
Publication Policy and Procedures
1. In most cases, "Notes and Notices" will be published every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Because of holiday schedules, or an insufficient number of articles, the issue date may be changed or eliminated at the discretion of the editor.
2. An announcement or publicity covering an event will be published one time only. A brief 2-3 line reminder of an event, stating the event name, date, time and location may be allowed in one subsequent edition. Announcements will generally not be repeated in their entirety.
3. Except as defined in paragraph 4, only items relating directly to Bucknell and received from active or retired members of the faculty or staff will be accepted for publication. Student items must be submitted through a member of the faculty or staff.
4. Announcements from faculty or staff relating to off-campus groups will be published once a week, on Friday, ahead of classifieds. Items will be accepted promoting events and programs of non-profit, cultural or artistic organizations on the condition that such items will result in no financial gain for any party involved, and are of interest to the broad campus community. Such items are restricted to 100 words in length and are accepted solely at the discretion of the editor. Items representing commercial businesses as well as off-campus religious, fraternal or political organizations, or relating to candidates for public office, will not be accepted. In addition, advertisements for the sale of items and commodities promoted solely for the purpose of fund raising will not be accepted for publication.
5. Classified ads are run once a week as the last item in the Friday edition, and are accepted from regular full-time faculty and staff members only, including retirees. Ads representing commercial, for-profit enterprises will not be accepted. With the exception of real estate, classifieds are intended to advertise garage sale or one-time sale type items. Ads for consumable, repeat-sale commodities or for-profit items will not be accepted. Ads for real estate, whether for sale or rent, are limited to residential properties only. Ads for animals or pets are restricted to “free to a good home” only. The item represented in the ad must be for sale or rent by the person submitting the ad. Ads submitted by employees representing others, or acting as an agent or second party will not be accepted. Classified ads are limited to 30 words in length. For purposes of identification the submitter's full name, department and home telephone number must be included in the request (this information will not be published). Classified ads may not be repeated in consecutive issues; however items may be re-submitted on alternating Fridays.
6. All items submitted must be typewritten and submitted as hard-copy sent to Administrative Services, submitted through the Notes and Notices web site, or sent through e-mail to: nnotices@bucknell.edu. Items should be submitted not more than 5 days prior to the date of publication, nor later than 12 noon the day prior to publication. Items submitted in hard-copy form must be signed and dated by the submitter.
7. Ordinarily, the maximum allowable length of a submission is 500 words. While most items are published as received, Administrative Services reserves the right to edit all items for length and content.
8. The submitter should include a brief (six-word maximum) headline for the item.
9. Administrative Services reserves the right to accept, reject or modify any items at its sole discretion.
