Former U.S. Attorney General Speaks at Bucknell
John Ashcroft, former attorney general of the United States and U.S. senator from Missouri, is scheduled to speak at Bucknell on April 9 in the Weis Center for the Performing Arts. Ashcroft’s speech on “Today and the Future of Homeland Security” is the Bucknell University Conservatives Club's Fourth Annual Alumni Lecture, a series supported by Bucknell alumni and former BUCC members from every decade back to the 1950s. Father Moran Named Director of National CCMA
Father Martin O. Moran III, Catholic chaplain of the University, has been chosen as the new executive director of the Catholic Campus Ministry Association (CCMA). He will begin his new position at CCMA’s national office in Cincinnati, Ohio, on June 1. During his nine years of service to Bucknell, the CCM has increased student membership by 80 percent to 1,100 undergraduates and has received several awards of national recognition. In his new role, Fr. Moran will oversee the more than 1,800 Catholic Campus Ministers who serve more than 5 million Catholic students at 4,000 campuses across the United States. Legacies Invited to Explore College Life and Admissions
Children of alumni will have two great opportunities in June. “Begin the Journey,” a brand-new legacy program, takes place Friday, June 1, during Reunion Weekend. This program offers a fun-filled day for Bucknell alumni children or grandchildren who have just finished the eighth grade. It will feature activities revolving around college life and will include an early look at the admissions process. Parents may register their children on the Reunion website. An intensive College Admissions Workshop will be offered on campus June 24-26 for Bucknell alumni and employee children who will be high school seniors in fall 2007. Conducted by University admissions professionals, this residential experience will focus on the college search and the application process. If space allows, rising juniors may be included. Myers Named Chief of Staff
R. David Myers has been named chief of staff for Bucknell President Brian C. Mitchell. He will oversee the administrative operations of the president’s office and assist the president with a range of major initiatives, such as the implementation of The Plan for Bucknell, development of the new campus master plan, and management of the leadership role that President and Mrs. Mitchell play in campaign fundraising. Myers, who began his work at Bucknell on April 2, most recently served as deputy chief of staff for Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell. Kiplinger’s Ranks Bucknell a Best Value
The April edition of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance ranked Bucknell as one of the best values in private institutions of higher education across the country. Among the 1,000 schools researched by the magazine and ranked in two broad categories, Bucknell was ranked 19th among the liberal arts colleges in the story “Best Values in Private Colleges.” The magazine used a variety of quality and financial measures for the calculation. Bucknell Receives Luce Foundation Grant
The Henry Luce Foundation has awarded Bucknell a $450,000 grant to enhance the quality of training and research in environmental studies, environmental science, and natural resource management. Over the next four years, approximately 100 students in the natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and humanities will benefit from grant-funded opportunities in interdisciplinary and hands-on learning through the study of the upper Susquehanna watershed. Alternative Spring-Breakers Share Stories on Blogs
Bucknell student ambassadors and staff traveled the world over spring break. They documented their adventures with Habitat for Humanity in Miami and Hawaii, the Bucknell Brigade’s ongoing work in a Nicaraguan settlement community, and one group’s rediscovery of the legacy of the civil rights movement in the Deep South. Wrestling Caps Successful Return at NCAA Championships
The Bucknell wrestling team wrapped up a successful 2006-07 campaign at the NCAA Championships as first-years David Marble, Andy Rendos, and Eric Lapotsky advanced to round three of the consolation bracket. Externship Program Offers Valuable Career Experience
The Bucknell Externship Program, offered each January by the Career Development Center, gives sophomores hands-on experience in work environments of potential interest to them. Externship sponsors are alumni, parents, or friends of the University in a wide variety of career areas. They volunteer to provide two-day shadowing experiences to give students a better understanding of job functions and workplace culture. More than 200 sophomores completed externships over winter break with 146 different organizations. Current first-year students who would like to participate in January 2008 must attend one of several orientation sessions, which will be held in late spring and early fall. New Fiction by Robert Love Taylor, Professor Emeritus
A new novel by Robert Love Taylor, professor emeritus of English, evokes folk, jazz, and bluegrass traditions. Blind Singer Joe’s Blues (Southern Methodist University Press) illuminates an era of sod houses, moonshiners, and snake-handling faith healers in Tennessee and the early days of Oklahoma. Taylor taught creative writing and Appalachian literature at Bucknell for 33 years before retiring in 2005. He will take part in a poetry and fiction reading with poet Cynthia Hogue, former Stadler Center director, on April 10 at 7 p.m. in Bucknell Hall.
